Il 27 novembre 2004, con una cerimonia tenutasi in India, l'Aga Khan ha reso noti i nomi dei sette vincitori del più grande - almeno in quanto a partecipazione - premio di architettura del mondo: 378 progetti sono stati preventivamente selezionati, per essere poi ridotti a 23 per un'analisi di maggiore approfondimento. Una giuria indipendente, formata da Ghada Amer, Hanif Kara, Rahul Mehrotra, Farshid Moussavi, Modjtaba Sadria, Reinhard Schulze, Elias Torres, Billie Tsien e Jafar Tukan, ha infine selezionato i sette progetti vincitori; progetti che, nell'indispensabile qualità architettonica a livello internazionale, dovevano riflettere i valori della società islamica.
I sette progetti selezionati sono stati:
- la Biblioteca Alexandrina, ad Alessandria, in Egitto, progettata da Snohetta Hamza Consortium, Egitto e Norvegia;
- una scuola a Gando, in Burkina Faso, progettata da Diébédo Francis Kéré, Burkina Faso;
- il progetto sperimentale per case autocostruite con materiali poveri (terra e sabbia) del Cal-Earth Institute, Nader Khalili, US;
- il restauro della Moschea di Al-Abbas, ad Asnaf, nello Yemen, progettata da MarylEne Barret, Francia, con la collaborazione di Abdullah al-Hadrami, Yemen;
- il programma di riuso e rivitalizzazione della vecchia città di Gerusalemme dell'OCJRP Technical Office di Gerusalemme;
- la B2 House, ad Ayvacik, in Turchia dell'architetto Han Tumertekin;
- le Petronas Towers a Kuala Lumpur, in Malesia, di Cesar Pelli.
Due dei progetti, la Biblioteca Alexandrina e le Petronas Towers sono il prodotto di importanti concorsi internazionali; i "Sandbag Shelter Prototypes", il progetto per le case autocostruite, costituisce un importante sperimentazione orientata alla "sostenibilità". La necessità di reperire abitazioni e le risposte date dal progetto di "Rivitalizzazione della vecchia città di Gerusalemme" sono alla base del successo di un progetto premiato per la completezza di risposte. La Primary School di Gando, in Burkina Faso, tipologicamente appropriata, si sviluppa nella congruenza tra forma architettonica e utilizzo di risorse locali, mentre la B2 House, ubicata in un piccolo villaggio costiero mediterraneo, estende la qualità architettonica ad un livello poetico, stabilendo un dialogo tra "natura e artificio", tra esterno ed interno, tra pubblico e privato. Il restauro della Moschea di Al-Abbas, infine, rappresenta una punta nella sperimentazione delle tecniche di restauro e conservazione e, allo stesso tempo, si pone quale sperimentazione sulla natura e sull'importanza contemporanea dei luoghi sacri. Si tratta di progetti, tutti, che, a parere della giuria, si sono posti quale investigazione, sperimentazione e scoperta delle modificazioni dell'architettura nel mondo islamico in rapporto alla contemporaneità ed alle diversità. Quattro le aree individuate dalla giuria per illustrare e comprendere i progetti vincitori: come la complessità della storia e la memoria storica possono essere espresse in architettura; come le iniziative private possono venire integrate dalla sfera pubblica emergente; come esprimere individualità all'interno di complessi sociali e in contesti caratterizzati dalla pluralità delle tradizioni islamiche; e come il potere e l'autorità possano venire attribuite all'architettura nel dominio globale della tecnologia, della cultura e dell'economia. Nato nel 1977, l'Aga Khan Award for Architecture si propone da allora di identificare e incoraggiare sperimentazioni in grado di soddisfare i bisogni e le aspirazioni della società islamica.
