B018

B018 is a music club, a place of nocturnal survival.
In the early months of 1998, the B018 moved to the "Quarantaine", on a site that was better known for its macabre aura. The "Quarantaine" is located at the proximity of the port of Beirut. During the French protectorate, it was a place of quarantine for arriving crews. In the recent war it became the abode of Palestinian, Kurdish and South Lebanese refugees (20,000 in 1975). In January 1976, local militia men launched a radical attack that completely wiped out the area. The slums were demolished along with the kilometer long bordering wall that isolated the zone from the city. Over twenty years later, the scars of war are still perceptible through the disparity between the scarce urban fabric of the area and the densely populated neighborhoods located across the highway that borders the zone. The B018 project is, first of all, a reaction to difficult and explosive conditions that are inherent to the history of its location and the contradictions that are implied by the implementation of an entertainment program on such a site. B018 refuses to participate to the naïve amnesia that governs the post-war reconstruction efforts.

B018

Nei primi mesi del 1998, il B018 si è trasferito nella "Quarantaine", in un contesto conosciuto per la sua aura “macabra”. La "Quarantaine" si trova in prossimità del porto di Beirut. Durante il protettorato francese, era un luogo di quarantena per gli equipaggi in arrivo. Nella guerra recente è diventato la dimora dei rifugiati palestinesi, curdi e del sud libanese (20.000 nel 1975). Nel gennaio 1976, l’area è stata completamente liberata. Le baraccopoli demolite insieme al muro lungo il chilometro che isolava la zona dalla città. Oltre vent'anni dopo, le cicatrici della guerra sono ancora percepibili ed evidenti a causa della scarsa densità edilizia rispetto ai quartieri densamente popolati situati lungo l'autostrada che confina con la zona. Il progetto B018 è, prima di tutto, una reazione, una risposta forte alle condizioni difficili del contesto, della sua storia, della sua posizione e delle sue implicite contraddizioni. B018 non partecipa all'ingenua “amnesia” che governa gli sforzi di ricostruzione postbellica.

The project is built below ground. Its façade is pressed into the ground to avoid the over exposure of a mass that could act as a rhetorical monument. The building is embedded in a circular concrete disc slightly above tarmac level. At rest, it is almost invisible. It comes to life in the late hours of the night when its articulated roof structure constructed in heavy metal retracts hydraulically. The opening of the roof exposes the club to the world above and reveals the cityscape as an urban backdrop to the patrons below. Its closing translates a voluntary disappearance, a gesture of recess. The building is encircled by concrete and tarmac rings. The automobiles' circular travel around the club and the concentric parking spots frame the building in a carousel formation. At night, the continuous motion of the visitors' cars animates the parking and becomes an integral element of the club's scenario. The entrance is located at the south end of the low-lying metal construction where a stair leads to two concessive "airlock" spaces manned by scowling bouncers. Strewn across the concrete pavement floor of the underground hall, the sofas with collapsible backs serve as elevated dancing surfaces that stage the performers.

Il progetto è volutamente costruito sotto terra. La facciata è impressa nel suolo per evitare di costruire un edificio che potrebbe trarre in inganno, fungere da simbolo, da monumento retorico. L'edificio è inserito in un disco circolare di cemento leggermente al di sopra del livello dell'asfalto. Durante la chiusura è quasi invisibile. Si anima nelle tarde ore della notte quando l’articolata struttura del tetto, costruita in metallo pesante, si ritrae idraulicamente. L'apertura alla sommità apre il club al mondo soprastante e rivela il paesaggio urbano come sfondo riservato agli avventori sottostanti. La sua chiusura si traduce in una volontaria scomparsa, una sorta di recesso. L'edificio è circondato da cemento e asfalto. Il giro circolare che le automobili devono fare intorno al club e le aree a parcheggio concentriche incorniciano l'edificio in una sorta di formazione a carosello. Durante la notte, il movimento continuo delle auto dei visitatori anima il parcheggio che diviene elemento integrante dello scenario del club. L'ingresso è situato all'estremità sud della costruzione metallica bassa dove una scala conduce a due spazi distinti, presidiati da buttafuori. Sparsi sul pavimento di cemento della hall sotterranea, i divani con schienali pieghevoli fungono anche da pedane sopraelevate.

Centrale

The Centrale project is housed in a recuperated ruin of a 1920's residential structure that is placed under historical protection. It is located in an area that was deserted during the civil war due to its proximity to the demarcation line that separated east and west Beirut. To the vicinity of the site is the Beirut Central District historical quarters that have been subject to a general rehabilitation scheme through which the formal features of ottoman, colonial and other various influences were restored to their "original" state. For the purpose of implementing the required space for the restaurant within the remains of the existing house, the internal partitioning walls of the building and the slab of the first floor level had to be demolished. In the process of voiding out the interior of the existing structure, the outer envelope of the house had to be reinforced by placing horizontal beams that embrace the skin from the outer perimeter of the façade. Our rehabilitation scheme implements this temporary process in the final configuration of the edifice. The steel beams used in the temporary reinforcement process are preserved. They now imply a new reading of the non-restored façade. Furthermore, we chose not to re-plaster the damaged facade, as it would have been the case in a traditional rehabilitation, instead, it is covered with a metallic mesh behind which the plaster finishing of the old façade remains in a state of decomposition. The mesh now enhances the poetic dimension of decay.

Centrale

Il progetto “Centrale” è ospitato in una rovina recuperata di una struttura residenziale del 1920 che è posta sotto protezione storica. Si trova in una zona che è stata deserta durante la guerra civile a causa della sua vicinanza alla linea di demarcazione che ha separato Beirut est da Beirut ovest. Vicino al sito sono ubicati i quartieri storici del distretto centrale di Beirut che sono stati sottoposti ad un programma generale di riabilitazione attraverso il quale le caratteristiche architettoniche ottomane, coloniali e le altre diverse influenze sono state ripristinate al loro stato "originario". Al fine di realizzare lo spazio necessario ad ospitare il ristorante all'interno dei resti della casa esistente, le pareti divisorie interne e il solaio del primo piano dovevano essere demolite. Per poter demolire la struttura esistente interna era necessario rinforzare l’involucro esterno, realizzando cordolature orizzontali che abbracciassero la pelle dal perimetro esterno della facciata. Il programma di recupero ha sottolineato in maniera permanente questa soluzione temporanea nella configurazione finale dell'edificio. Le travi in acciaio utilizzate per i rinforzi temporanei sono state conservate e inducono ad una nuova lettura della facciata non restaurata. E’ stato inoltre deciso di non re intonacare la facciata danneggiata, come sarebbe avvenuto in un qualsiasi recupero tradizionale: questa è stata coperta da una maglia metallica dietro la quale la finitura dell'intonaco della vecchia facciata è rimasta in uno stato di decomposizione. La maglia metallica ha aumentato la dimensione poetica del decadimento.

In the double volume of the main hall lies one central table. The service personnel remains trapped inside the table and communicate directly through a flight of stairs with the kitchen underground. Every dish on the table is lit with its own pilot lamp. Such a formal aspect - similar to a conference table for a general assembly - is further enhanced by the proportions of the high back chairs that line the table to insure the secrecy of the assembly. Above the main hall, structural beams inscribe a circular section that inhabits a 17-meter-long bar. The beams also serve as tracks for the rotating movement of the cylindrical envelope of the bar space. The construction process of the Centrale project relied heavily on the know-how of the local craft industry. Low-tech and non-standard techniques were particularly in use in the metal works. This is part of a more general concern we have with the making of architecture. It is a reaction to the prevalent construction industry that relies on standardized modes of production and an attempt to escape the typical process of construction by re-enacting traditional ways of making.

Nel doppio volume della sala principale si trova un tavolo centrale. Il personale di servizio rimane “intrappolato” all'interno del tavolo e comunica direttamente attraverso una rampa di scale con la cucina sotterranea sottostante. Ogni piatto sul tavolo è illuminato da una propria lampada pilota. Tale aspetto formale, simile a quello di una conferenza per un'assemblea generale, è ulteriormente rafforzato dalle proporzioni delle sedie posteriori alte che allineano la tavola per assicurare la segretezza dell'assemblea. Sopra la sala principale, i fasci strutturali inscrivono una sezione circolare che ospita un bar lungo 17 metri. Le travi servono anche come binari per il movimento rotante dell’involucro cilindrico dello spazio bar. Il processo costruttivo si è basato fondamentalmente sul know-how dell'industria artigianale locale. Le tecniche low-tech e non-standard sono state particolarmente utilizzate nelle opere metalliche. Una preoccupazione generale sulla costruzione dell'architettura. Una reazione all'industria delle costruzioni prevalente, che si basa su modalità di produzione standardizzate, oltre che un tentativo di sfuggire al tipico processo costruttivo industrializzato, ripristinando i modi tradizionali della produzione edilizia.

Derailing Beirut

As an ultimate act of resistance to a falsified history in which we have become passive actors, are we capable of inventing the tools that can overturn Beirut’s sensational stereotypes and denounce the innumerable fantasies attributed to it. We propose to draw an infernal circuit in which the sensation-driven tourists seeking instant gratification are propelled in a pre-determined course. As passive projectiles, the tourists are placed in a hermetically lethargic situation to ultimately be embedded in expected represe`ntations and clichés of our city. Beirut becomes an exotic amusement park destined to be consumed through representations of a History that escapes us, postcards that will hopefully be deemed historical waste.

Derailing Beirut

Come un ultimo atto di resistenza a una storia falsa in cui siamo diventati attori passivi, siamo in grado di inventare gli strumenti che possono rovesciare gli stereotipi sensazionali di Beirut e denunciare le innumerevoli fantasie attribuite ad esso. Proponiamo di disegnare un circuito infernale in cui i turisti che rincorrono la sensazione della ricerca di gratificazione immediata vengono spinti in un percorso pre-determinato. Come proiettili passivi, i turisti sono collocati in una situazione di “letargo ermetico” per essere incorporati in ultima analisi nelle rappresentazioni e nei cliché della nostra città. Beirut diventa un parco di divertimenti esotico destinato ad essere consumato attraverso le rappresentazioni di una storia che ci sfugge, cartoline che speriamo essere considerate rifiuti storici.

Saïd, bearer of the rolling capsule, wanders the city awaiting the occasional tourist. His task consists of recuperating the device at the bottom of its course and hauling it back to its departure point. Before being assigned this duty, Saïd was a porter at Beirut International Airport. French Photographer Eric Lambert came to Beirut to document the circuit that was jointly implemented by private investors and the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism. Soon enough, Lambert’s fascination for Saïd’s routine prevailed over the initial object of his research: the tentacular tracks within the cityscape become a mere background to the city that has yet again assimilated another layer into its fabric.

Saïd, portatore del proiettile vagante, vaga nella città in attesa del turista occasionale. Il suo compito consiste nel recuperare il dispositivo in fondo al suo corso e riportarlo al suo punto di partenza. Prima di essere assegnato a questo compito, Saïd era un portiere dell'aeroporto internazionale di Beirut. Il fotografo francese Eric Lambert è venuto a Beirut per documentare il circuito realizzato congiuntamente da investitori privati e dal Ministero del turismo libanese. Presto, il fascino di Lambert per la routine di Saïd prevale per l'oggetto iniziale della sua ricerca: le tracce tentacolari all'interno del paesaggio urbano diventano un semplice sfondo per la città che ha assimilato un altro, ulteriore strato nel suo tessuto.

N.B.K. Residence

Located at the ninth and last level of the Plot # 2251 project which we conceived in 2008 and for which construction ended in 2013, this three-storey apartment is articulated through an independent structure capping the building. Structurally, the apartment only shares the building’s vertical circulation core, as well as the perimeter along which its two peripheral walls lie. Beyond the ninth level, the structure of this residence becomes autonomous, rendering it morphologically detached from the edifice. The result is what resembles an independent house placed atop a building, rather than what is commonly known as a penthouse or roof level apartment. The articulation of this project is also related to its geographic location. Virtually situated on the former demarcation line which separated east and west Beirut, this apartment opens up onto “the hell” of its city, placing it neither east nor west but in between. Whereas usual preference for Mediterranean roof apartments is to turn their backs on the urban fabric in exchange for a sea view, this apartment is oriented toward the city, taking advantage of the setbacks imposed due to the surrounding projects defining its entire periphery. These include the Maronite Cemetery, the Beirut Hippodrome and various institutional buildings. All relatively low-rise, these guarantee view corridors extending in the southwestern direction towards the Chouf mountains which subside in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as well as in the western direction and towards the former demarcation line defined by Damascus Road. This situation in fact informed and defined the large frame instantaneously experienced upon one’s arrival to the apartment. 12 meters wide and 6 meters high, the reception which extends from the landing is an almost exaggerated, unobstructed and completely open space.

N.B.K. Residence

Situato al nono e ultimo livello del progetto Plot # 2251 progettato nel 2008 e ultimato nel 2013, questo appartamento a tre piani si articola in una struttura indipendente dall'edificio ospitante. Strutturalmente, l'appartamento condivide solo il blocco di collegamento verticale dell'edificio, e il perimetro lungo il quale sono ubicate le due pareti esternee. Al di là del nono livello, la struttura di questa residenza diviene autonoma, morfologicamente staccata dall'organismo edilizio. Il risultato è un organismo edilizio indipendente posto in cima ad un edificio, piuttosto che quello che comunemente viene definito “attico” o “penthouse”. L'articolazione di questo progetto è legata anche alla sua posizione geografica. Praticamente situato sull'ex linea di demarcazione che ha separato Beirut est da Beirut ovest, l’appartamento si apre sull'inferno della sua città, collocandosi né a est né ad ovest, ma in una situazione di mezzo. In controtendenza rispetto ai soliti appartamenti mediterranei sulle coperture, dove usualmente si volgono le spalle al tessuto urbano rivolgendo la vista al mare, questo immobile è orientato verso la città, e sfrutta le difficoltà imposte dal contesto, dai progetti e dalle realizzazioni circostanti che definiscono e costituiscono la totalità della periferia. Si tratta di luoghi come il cimitero maronita, l'ippodromo di Beirut e vari edifici istituzionali. Tutto è relativamente basso, le costruzioni definiscono corridoi urbani che si estendono nella direzione sud-ovest verso le montagne di Chouf che si innalzano sulla periferia meridionale di Beirut, così come nella direzione occidentale e verso l'ex linea di demarcazione definita dalla strada per Damasco. Una situazione che ha informato e definito il grande telaio sperimentato con il progetto: 12 metri di larghezza e 6 metri di altezza, uno spazio quasi esagerato, occludente e insieme completamente aperto.

The apartment comprises three levels, the reference level being the landing floor throughout which the vital programmatic functions take place – the reception space, the dining room, the master bedroom as well as the kitchen. The mezzanine level accommodates two additional bedrooms, as well the continuation of the floor-to-ceiling library accessible at this level by a steel grating bridge crossing the entire frame of the reception, and seemingly floating once the floor-to-ceiling glazing is retracted. Lastly, the uppermost level houses the pool terrace, as well as a guest studio and staff quarters. N.B.K. Residence 2 resumes certain experimentations with interior layouts, furnishings and materials used in various projects throughout the years, including N.B.K. Residence 1 which was conceived 12 years earlier. The experience gained by these allowed for the development of a certain knowledge related to the misappropriation and reinterpretation of traditional materials, through the reanimation of specific artisanal practices. Alliances formed with local artisans over the years were thus rekindled, and materialize in the intricate steelwork and elaborate woodwork of the apartment, notably in the reception area. The wood panel cladding of the reception space is defined by a layout that starts at the floor, folding onto the walls and ceiling, and extending throughout the rest of the rooms. This same cladding layout defines that of the steelwork, which ultimately frames the focal point of the room, a piece affixed to the ceiling housing all air conditioning and ventilation equipment. The modern tradition has rarely worked the ceiling, and this element thus takes us back to traditional interior architectural practices. However, rather than a fresco, this installation consists of an extremely dense hood-like structure, designed to perfection in coordination with a mechanical engineer, with plaster as the material of choice. A traditional material typically associated with ornamental cornices and mouldings within a typically classical language, the plaster is in this case painted black rather than white, and misappropriated to portray a much more contemporary and machinist expression. The result is an alien-like object seemingly hovering above the space, clearly portraying an unconventional form and aesthetic conceived using an artisanal trade as well as the perversion of a traditional material. Lastly, the outdoor pool terrace at the roof level is crowned by two antennae containing the area’s light fixtures. Southwardly oriented, these probe-like pivoting projections exceed the height average of their adjacent buildings, making them visible from surrounding neighbourhoods.

L'appartamento è composto da tre livelli, il livello di riferimento è il piano di ingresso, in cui si svolgono le funzioni vitali del programma: l’ingresso, la sala da pranzo, la camera matrimoniale e la cucina. Il piano rialzato ospita due camere da letto aggiuntive, la continuazione della biblioteca dal pavimento al soffitto, accessibile a questo livello da un ponte a graticcio che attraversa l'intero telaio della reception e che apparentemente galleggia una volta che la vetrata dal pavimento al soffitto viene ritratta. In conclusione, il livello più alto ospita una terrazza con piscina, uno studio per gli ospiti e il personale. N.B.K. Residence 2 riprende alcune sperimentazioni caratterizzati da layout interni, arredi e materiali utilizzati in vari progetti negli anni, tra cui N.B.K. Residence 1, concepito 12 anni prima. L'esperienza acquisita da questi precedenti progetti ha permesso lo sviluppo di una certa conoscenza legata all'uso approfondito e alla reinterpretazione dei materiali tradizionali, attraverso la rianimazione di pratiche artigianali specifiche. Le pratiche sperimentate con gli artigiani locali negli anni si sono sviluppate nelle complesse lavorazioni in acciaio e nell'elaborato lavoro con il legno nell’alloggio, in particolare nella zona della reception. Il rivestimento del pannello di legno dello spazio d’ingresso è definito da un layout che parte dal pavimento, piegando le pareti e il soffitto e si estende per tutto il resto delle stanze. Questo stesso schema di rivestimento definisce quello della lavorazione d'acciaio, che in ultima analisi inquadra il punto focale della stanza, un pezzo apposto al soffitto che ospita tutti gli impianti di condizionamento e ventilazione. La tradizione moderna ha raramente lavorato al soffitto e questo elemento ci riporta alle pratiche architettoniche tradizionali interne. Tuttavia, piuttosto che un affresco, questa installazione consiste in una struttura estremamente densa di cappuccio, progettata per perfezionare in coordinazione con un ingegnere meccanico, con in gesso come il materiale da scegliere. Un materiale tradizionale tipicamente associato a cornici ornamentali e modanature all'interno di un linguaggio tipicamente classico, l'intonaco è in questo caso dipinto di nero invece che bianco, e approfittato per ritrarre un'espressione molto più contemporanea e machinista. Il risultato è un oggetto alieno apparentemente levandosi sopra lo spazio, illustrando chiaramente una forma e l'estetica non convenzionali concepiti usando un commercio artigianale e la perversione di un materiale tradizionale. Infine, la terrazza all'aperto sul livello del tetto è coronata da due antenne contenenti corpi illuminanti. Orientate verso sud, i corpi illuminanti sono orientabili e superano l’altezza media degli edifici adiacenti; sono visibili dai quartieri circostanti.
