Si è aperta ufficialmente il 26 maggio la Biennale curata dalle irlandesi Grafton, già Leone d’Argento alla Biennale 2012. Freespace nasce da un articolato manifesto nel quale le curatrici dublinesi da oltre un anno hanno lanciato la proposta progettuale della loro Biennale, delineando contenuti possibili e prospettive progettuali. Un tema “semplice”, e per questo straordinariamente efficace.
Sessantatré le partecipazioni nazionali, che interpretano in vario modo il concetto di “spazio libero”, tema non di poco interesse che caratterizza la Biennale 2018. Moltissimi i giovani e i nomi quasi sconosciuti. Lo spazio libero è stato interpretato in molteplici, dissimili visioni che hanno disegnato spazi comuni e collettivi, luoghi e momenti di condivisione (le biblioteche del padiglione finlandese,…). Edifici storici liberati, rivisitati, riusati, … infrastrutture, opere pubbliche… Architetture capaci di liberare luce, aria, suoni, capaci di liberare e restituire spazi – i tetti dei padiglioni ungherese e inglese, ad esempio -, di soddisfare desideri inespressi, come nella volontà delle curatrici.

Una Biennale eterogenea, che ha proposto visioni diverse, anche e soprattutto in ragione dei luoghi di provenienza dei singoli autori, che hanno fatto emergere diversità culturali, ambientali, economiche, tecnologiche e linguistiche. Un aspetto certamente positivo in un mondo globalizzato. Così le Corderie ospitano edifici in bambù, infrastrutture riutilizzate, luoghi di incontro, recuperi di periferie, e ospitano, anche, sé stesse, liberate, sgombre, fruibili in un allestimento che “respira”, che appare sgombro e calibrato. In cui è realmente possibile fruire delle installazioni. E libera e aperta appare anche l’esposizione ai Giardini, dove spiccano il progetto della Facoltà di Medicina della Columbia University di Diller Scofidio + Renfro e la torre per uffici di Guadalajara progettata da Carme Pinos. Molto interessante lo spazio dedicato ai progetti per Venezia di Frank Lloyd Wright per la Fondazione Masieri, di Le Corbusier per l’Ospedale di Cannaregio e di Louis Kahn per il Centro Congressi. Bellissimo l’edificio in legno, vicino all’acqua, di Rintala-Eggertsson a Forte Marghera.
Di grande interesse il padiglione svizzero (il padiglione vincitore), caratterizzato da una sorta di labirinto in cui gli elementi di un’abitazione variano dimensionalmente da ambiente ad ambiente; e quello tedesco, che ripropone frontalmente un muro nero (il muro della morte) che si sgretola lateralmente, smaterializzando sé stesso nell’esporre i progetti del “dopo muro”. O il labirinto dei “luoghi di culto” proposto da Israele. Sorprendente il padiglione arancione dell’Olanda, fatto di pareti contenenti porte e armadietti, da cui si accede ad altri ambienti o a progetti. Una Biennale che si propone come laboratorio di ricerca su tematiche assolutamente attuali, che rivedono Europa e Nord America ridiventare centrali nel dibattito architettonico contemporaneo.

FREESPACE si focalizza sulla capacità dell’architettura di offrire in dono spazi liberi e supplementari a coloro che ne fanno uso, nonché sulla sua capacità di rivolgersi ai desideri inespressi dell’estraneo.
FREESPACE celebra l’abilità dell’architettura di trovare una nuova e inattesa generosità in ogni progetto, anche nelle condizioni più private, difensive, esclusive o commercialmente limitate.
FREESPACE dà l’opportunità di enfatizzare i doni gratuiti della natura come quello della luce – la luce del sole, quella lunare, l’aria, la forza di gravità, i materiali – le risorse naturali e artificiali.
FREESPACE invita a riesaminare il nostro modo di pensare, stimolando nuovi modi di vedere il mondo e di inventare soluzioni in cui l’architettura provvede al benessere e alla dignità di ogni abitante di questo fragile pianeta.
FREESPACE può essere uno spazio di opportunità, uno spazio democratico, non programmato e libero per utilizzi non ancora definiti. Tra le persone e gli edifici avviene uno scambio, anche se non intenzionale o non progettato, pertanto anche molto tempo dopo l’uscita di scena dell’architetto gli edifici stessi trovano nuove modalità di condivisione, coinvolgendo le persone nel corso del tempo.
L’architettura ha una vita attiva e al contempo passiva.
FREESPACE abbraccia la libertà di immaginare lo spazio libero di tempo e memoria, collegando passato, presente e futuro, costruendo sulle stratificazioni della nostra eredità culturale, legando l’arcaico e il contemporaneo.
Con il tema Freespace la Biennale Architettura 2018 presenterà al pubblico esempi, proposte, elementi – costruiti o non costruiti – di opere che esemplificano le qualità essenziali dell’architettura; la modulazione, la ricchezza e la materialità delle superfici, l’orchestrazione e la disposizione in sequenza del movimento, rivelando le potenzialità e la bellezza insite nell’architettura.
La Mostra avrà una presenza spaziale e fisica su una scala e con caratteristiche tali da avere un forte impatto sul visitatore, comunicando la complessa natura spaziale dell’architettura.
La Mostra propone un coinvolgimento emotivo e intellettuale dei visitatori che verranno alla Biennale, per comprendere l’architettura, stimolare il dibattito sui valori centrali dell’architettura e celebrare il contributo reale e duraturo che l’architettura offre all’umanità.
Quando Jørn Utzon ha pensato alla seduta di cemento coperta di piastrelle all’entrata del Can Lis, a Maiorca, l’ha concepita modellandola perfettamente sul corpo umano per il suo comfort e benessere. A livello spaziale essa rappresenta una “parola” di saluto e benvenuto.

Così l’imponente parete esterna rappresenta anche un muro che racchiude uno spazio pubblico. La struttura solida sembra volgersi all’esterno assumendo un carattere generoso.
Siamo convinti che tutti abbiano il diritto di beneficiare dell’architettura. Il suo ruolo, infatti, è di offrire un riparo ai nostri corpi e di elevare i nostri spiriti. La bella parete di un edificio che costeggia la strada dona piacere ai passanti, anche se non vi entreranno mai. Lo stesso piacere è dato dalla vista di una corte attraverso un portale ad arco o un luogo nel quale trovare un punto di sosta per godere di un po’ di ombra o una nicchia che offre riparo dal vento o dalla pioggia.
Ciò che ci interessa è andare oltre ciò che è visibile, enfatizzando il ruolo dell’architettura nella coreografia della vita quotidiana.
Noi consideriamo la Terra come un Cliente. Questa visione implica una serie di responsabilità a lungo termine. L’architettura è il gioco di luce, sole, ombra, luna, aria, vento, forza di gravità con modalità che rivelano i misteri del mondo e tutte queste risorse sono gratuite.
Nella 16. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura si celebrano gli esempi di generosità e di sollecitudine nell’architettura in tutto il mondo. Siamo convinti che queste qualità sostengano la capacità fondamentale dell’architettura di promuovere e supportare il contatto importante che sussiste tra le persone e lo spazio. Concentriamo la nostra attenzione su queste qualità perché pensiamo che l’ottimismo e la continuità ne siano parte costitutiva.
