Lecture Hall Building for the Montan University Leoben

The 1970’s lecture hall building of the Montan University Leoben has been extensively refurbished to meet current standards. In addition to an energy refit, the upgrading of the whole building technology and adaption to suit the needs of the physically disadvantaged the building’s range of functions was extended. An elevated structure was placed in front of the existing building to both clear the urban situation and to enlarge the existing foyer. The foyer now ensures that lectures can be held at the same time as conferences, that parties –both official and student – can take place at the campus and that students find an informal meeting and working place.

L’edificio anni 70 della sala conferenze della Leoben Montan University è stato ampiamente ristrutturato per soddisfare gli standard attuali. Oltre all’adeguamento impiantistico, il progetto ha riconfigurato gli aspetti tecnologici dell’intero edificio adattato a soddisfare le esigenze e riempire i gap dell’edificio esistente ampliandone le funzioni. Una struttura sopraelevata è stata posta in fronte all'edificio esistente sia per chiarirne la situazione urbana che per allargare il foyer esistente. Il foyer ora appare dimostrare la capacità della struttura di ospitare al tempo stesso diversi tipi di attività, sia didattiche che conferenze di altro tipo – occasioni ufficiali e consuete per gli studenti – che si svolgeranno presso il campus dove gli studenti troveranno un luogo informale e al tempo stesso istituzionale.

The capacity of the lecture halls has been expanded and additional seminar rooms have been placed in the structure. The design is equally concerned with preserving the historic core of the building and with giving it a contemporary appearance. The existing orthogonal arrangement has been elaborated and transformed into the new-built structure. The distinct color scheme strenghtens the impression of a functionalist design.

La capacità delle aule è stata ampliata con aule seminariali supplementari collocate all’interno della struttura. L’idea del progetto si è conformata sulla valorizzazione della parte storica dell’edificio e insieme sull’appartenenza dell’intervento al contemporaneo. L’impianto, lo schema ortogonale preesistente è stato rielaborato e trasformato in una nuova struttura. Lo schema dei singoli colori utilizzati rafforza l'impressione di un disegno funzionalista.

Cultural Centre Bad Radkersburg

The project is a reactivation of three Renaissance houses in the historic core of the Styrian town Bad Radkersburg. The existing structure has been expanded into a culture, event and seminar centre. The important questions concerning the insertion of a new volume into the historic surroundings were the scale, the texture, and the functional context. The thoroughly-shaped silhouette of the new building reflects the town’s grown roof-scape. All over clad in Corten – a material suitable for a historic site since its patina harmonises with the brickwork of the old roofs– the new building blends into the existing fabric.

Centro Culturale Bad Radkersburg

Il progetto ha affrontato il tema della ristrutturazione di tre case rinascimentali nel centro Storico della città stiriana di Bad Radkersburg. La struttura esistente è stata ampliata in un centro per eventi culturali e spazi seminariali. Il problema principale nell’inserimento di un nuovo volume in un contesto storico era quello della scala, della texture e del contesto funzionale. La forma del nuovo edificio riflette lo skyline delle coperture urbane. Rivestito in corten – materiale che si arminizza, con la sua patina, ai cromatismi del laterizio delle coperture – il nuovo edificio si inserisce nell’esistente.

The historic inner courtyard was transformed into the central lobby - an atmospheric distributor which sustains the diversity of the venue: Each room can be booked individually and various activities can proceed at the same time or the entire venue can host one big event. The main halls’ design reflects their different configurations: The ground-floor hall Black Box is an introverted space well-equipped for electronic music, theatre and cinema whereas the second floor based White Hall is suited for chamber music and opens towards selected views of the town.

Il cortile interno storico è stato trasformato in hall centrale – un luogo di distribuzione per i diversi luoghi: ogni spazio può essere prenotato singolarmente o l’intero luogo può ospitare un unico grande evento. Il disegno di ogni hall ne riflette il carattere: il Black Box della hall al piano terra è uno spazio introverso equipaggiato per la musica elettronica, per il teatro e il cinema, la White Hall al secondo piano è attrezzata per la musica da camera e apre la sua vista alla città.
