Dune House

The house is situated in Thorpeness, England on the Suffolk coast, replacing an existing building at the site. The house is a holiday house for rental and is part of Living Architecture. To get a planning permission it was important to relate to the existing, typical, British seaside strip of houses. The roofscape, the bedroom floor, somehow plays with the formal presence of these buildings, and also brings into mind a romantic remembrance of holidays at bed- and breakfasts while traveling through the UK.

Dune House

La casa è ubicata a Thorpeness, in Inghilterra sulla costa della contea di Suffolk, e ricalca il sedime di un edificio pre esistente. Si tratta di una casa per vacanze in affitto, nel parco case di Living Architecture. Per conseguire il permesso di costruire era necessario il riferimento al contesto, caratterizzato da edifici tipici delle località costiere britanniche. L’andamento, la forma della copertura, la zona notte, in qualche modo giocano, si relazionano con la presenza formale delle preesistenze, richiamando emozionalità legate a vacanze in bed and breakfast viaggiando attraverso il Regno Unito.

The ground floor is contrasting this by its lack of relationship to the architecture of the top floor. The living area and the terraces are set into the dunes in order to protect it form the strong winds, and opens equally in all directions to allow for wide views. The corners can be opened by sliding doors; this will emphasize the floating appearance of the top floor. While the materiality of the ground floor; concrete, glass, aluminum, relates to the masses of the ground, the upper floor is a construction made of solid wood, cladding stained dark as the existing gables and sheds found in the area.

Il piano terra si pone in contrasto con l’architettura del piano superiore. La zona giorno e le terrazze sono poste, relativamente alle dune, in modo da proteggersi dai forti venti e al tempo stesso si aprono consentendo visuali a 360 gradi. Gli angoli sono apribili completamente grazie a porte scorrevoli che enfatizzano la natura flottante dell’edificio. Incontrapposizione ai materiali del piano terra, cemento, vetro, alluminio, il piano superiore è caratterizzato da solido legno scuro, replicante i timpani e le coperture circostanti.

Edge House

The Edge House is located at Kolbotn, a suburb south of Oslo. The client, a young couple, had purchased a challenging site with 8 meters height difference from the access road to a plateau. To save the plateau, the building was pushed towards the eastern perimeter of the site, suspended above the slope on slender steel columns. The entrance stair rises along the slope through the house up to the plateau.

Edge House

La Edge House è ubicata a Kolbotn, un quartiere a sud di Oslo. I committenti, una giovane coppia, avevano acquistato un terreno caratterizzato da otto metri di dislivello tra la strada di accesso e la sommità della proprietà. Per conservare la parte alta della proprietà l’edificio è stato collocato ai limiti orientali dell’appezzamento, sospeso sopra il pendio su colonne in acciaio sottile. La scala d’ingresso si sviluppa lungo il pendio attraverso la casa fino al pianoro soprastante.

This strategy avoids costly blasting, hiding the technical connections in the stair. It saves at the same time the existing characteristics of the site, creating a dramatic interplay between volume and site. The entrance condition and the experience from the inside attempts to underline this interplay. The compact interior is horizontally organized around the cut for the entrance stair. Bedrooms and bathrooms are effectively organized along a corridor. The main structure is steel, with a polished concrete floor slab. The interior is clad in Birch plywood, the exterior in naturally colored fiber cement boards.

Questa strategia ha evitato costose opere di consolidamento, e ha consentito di nascondere le componenti tecnologiche nella scala di accesso. Non è stato alterato, altresì, il contesto né le sue caratteristiche, creando un gioco “drammatico” tra volume e del sito. L’accesso alla casa e l’esperienza dal di dentro evidenziano e sottolineano questa interazione tra natura e artificio. L’interno, compatto, è organizzato orizzontalmente intorno al taglio della scala d’ingresso. Le camere da letto e i bagni sono efficacemente organizzati lungo un corridoio. La struttura principale è in acciaio, una lastra di cemento lucido funge da pavimento. L’interno è rivestito in legno multistrato di betulla, l’esterno in pannelli di fibra naturale color cemento.

Summer House Vestfold 2

The Summer house is located on the coast of Vestfold in the southern part of Norway. The house replaces an older building at the site. To get the planning permit, the project had to be well adjusted to the terrain, both in terms of shape, scale, material and color. The house and terraces are partly built upon existing stone walls, the parts of the walls which are new are made of stones from the blasting at the site.

La casa per le vacanze estive si trova sulla costa di Vestfold, nella parte meridionale della Norvegia. Sostituisce un vecchio edificio esistente sul sito. Per ottenere la licenza edilizia, il progetto doveva essere ben inserito nel contesto, sia in termini di forma, dimensioni, materiali e colori. La casa e le terrazze sono in parte realizzate su muri in pietra esistenti, parti delle pareti sono nuove e realizzate in pietra locale.

The low elongated volume is cut into to allow for wind shielded outdoor areas, embraced by the house itself. These cuts also bring down the scale of the building, and together with the local variations of the section, make the building relate to the surrounding cliff formations. On the outer perimeter of terraces and pool, a glass fence also protects against wind, but allows for maximum view. The house is clad with Kebony wood, a sustainable process of treating the wood to allow for good durability towards the exposure to salt water.

Il basso volume allungato è tagliato per consentire al vento di muoversi tra le aree schermate all’aperto, collocate attorno all’edificio. I tagli, inoltre, abbattono la scala dell’organismo edilizio e, con il variare della sezione, assimilano l’edificio alle formazioni rocciose circostanti. Sul perimetro esterno ai terrazzi e alla piscina, una recinzione di vetro protegge dal vento, ma consente una completa visuale. La casa è rivestita in legno Kebony, un modo sostenibile di trattare il legno per consentirne una buona durata all’esposizione all’acqua salata.
