Out there – Architecture beyond building

Building without creating architecture is the intriguing theme that dominates the Venice Biennale 2008 directed by Aaron Betsky, reversing the trend of previous exhibi-tions. A collection that extends the meaning of architec-ture: "buildings are one thing, architecture is another; it's the way we conceive of space, think of architecture, society, politics... architecture goes beyond, a long way beyond...". These are the concepts that open Betsky's multi-media introduction to the Venice show. A return to culture, to thought, even before returning to material, a return that both commands consensus and runs counter to virulent pragmatism, the trend towards hegemony with its levelling effect produced on the econo-mic systems. This is a culture and "design" theme, and is fascinating in its ability to reconnect, as has seldom been done before, the worlds of Architecture and Art. Research, experimentation, thought, non-construction are the watchwords of this conceptual Biennale, which from the outset comes closer to being a Visual Arts Bien¬nale than it does to recent Architecture shows. An exhi¬bition-cum-catalogue of the major works constructed at planetary level. There is no shortage of Stars: Zaha Hadid, Massimiliano Fuksas, Frank Gehry, Coop Himmelb(l)au, MVRDV, Herzog & De Meuron, Diller & Scofidio, to name a few... What is missing, however, are their most recent and famous works, the large-scale structures that have been built all over the world. Side by side with young de-signers, contemporary "Masters" measure up in entertai-ning and conceptually sophisticated projects. As always, it is at the Corderie that the best treatments of the theme can be seen. The visit begins with "Hall of Fragments" by David Rockwell, Casey Jones and Reed Kroloff, a scholar¬ly montage showing innumerable pictures of imaginary interactive architecture from the historical archive: an effective, high-impact presentation.

Costruire it futuro senza realizzare architetture e il tema suggestivo che domina la Biennale di Venezia 2008 ideata da Aaron Betsky, in qualche modo in controtendenza ri¬spetto alle Biennali precedenti. Una rassegna che ampli¬fica i significati del termine architettura: "gli edifici sono una cosa, l'architettura un'altra: e it modo in cui pensiamo alto spazio, pensiamo all'architettura, alla society, alla politica ... l'architettura e oltre, molto di più ..." questi i concetti che aprono l'introduzione multimediale di Betsky ally rassegna espositiva veneziana. Un ritorno alla cultura, at pensiero, prima che alla mate¬ria, un ritorno condiviso e condivisibile, in antitesi e con¬trotendenza at dilagante pragmatismo diffuso e aftege¬monizzante appiattimento sui sistemi economici.11 tema, culturale e "progettuale- e affascinante e collega, pia di sempre, it mondo dell'Architettura globale a quello dell'Ar¬te. Ricerca, sperimentazione, pensiero, non-costruzione caratterizzano una Biennale concettuale, motto pia simile gia dal primo impatto ad una Biennale di Arti Visive che alle pia recenti Biennali di Architettura, esposizioni/catalo¬go delle maggiori opere costruite a livello planetario. Anche in questa rassegna non mancano le star: Zaha Ha-did, Massimiliano Fuksas, Frank Gehry, Coop Himmelb(k) au, MVRDV, Herzog & De Meuron, Diller & Scofidio Mancano perb le Toro opere pia recenti e famose, le grandi costruzioni realizzate ovunque net mondo. Accanto a gio¬vani progettisti i "Maestri" contemporanei si cimentano in progetti divertenti e concettualmente sofisticati. E' alte Corderie che, come sempre, si esplicita it meglio del tema trattato. Di grande effetto e impatto 6, iniziando it percorso di visita, "Hall of Fragments" di David Rock¬well, Casey Jones e Reed Kroloff, una dotta proiezione di innumerevoli architetture immaginarie interattive tratte dalla filmografia storica.

A series of fantastic visions introduce the following exhi-bits, some of great fascination: "houses for the subcon-scious" by Asymptote or "Lotus" by Zaha Hadid Archi-tects; the theme of living single (actually already seen in New York at "The Un-Private House" of Terence Riley held at the MoMa in 1999) by Droog & Kesselskramer; the pul-sing heart of the city in a bubble by Coop Himmelb(l)au Spectacular and endless the fluid architecture of UN Stu-dio, a beautiful, sparkling white pavilion, an environment in constant metamorphosis. Of great interest the installations by Gehry and the Croa-tians Penezic & Rogina or Diller & Scofidio, on "how we see, perceive, things, the world".The exhibit by MVRDV, "sky city", is creative and centred on more contemporary themes, more advanced experimentation with concepts Viny Maas has been developing over the years. Philip- pe Rahm's "prototype for meteorological architecture" is an intelligent exhibit which focuses on research into the physical environment, optimising the temperature of inhabited spaces. Undoubtedly spectacular and of great interest, even if the section in the Giardini at times lapses into the commonplace and déjà vu. Facile and predictable the appeals for ecology and sustainability, a little obvious the American and Russian pavilions. What convinces about this collection is the show's ma-nifest title and the considerations of its curator: "What we need today is architecture that questions reality, that doesn't solve problems but poses them. With experi-ments, provisional structures and the odd sketch..." [".] "...we don't need buildings that consume Large quantities of environmental resources, skyscrapers that only serve to glorify those who put them up [".] you can't construct democracy with temples, but have to approach the issues involved critically". "Architecture must return to its origi¬nal mission: producing visions." Constructing the future without pouring any more cement, a common quest for sustainability and art, harmony, thou-ght. Art, Green, Technology are the key elements/ingre-dients in realising this vision, but that's not all. The central theme is that of "culture", a finger pointed at the econo¬mic "pragmatism" of current politics, at planetary level. An appeal for reflection and conceptual experimenta¬tion, which provides a fitting framework for "L'Italia cerca casa" (Italy looking for a home), an exhibit curated by Francesco Garofalo on the theme of housing. A strongly social theme that redirects our attention to problems that have yet to be resolved.

Una serie di visioni fantastiche introducono agli allestimenti successivi, alcuni di grande fascino, come "le case peril subconscio" di Asymptote o "Lotus", di Zaha Hadid Architects, it tema (gia visto, in realta, a New York in "The Un-Private House"di Terence Riley at MoMa net 1999) dei singles di Droog & Kessel¬skramer, del cuore pulsante della citta nella bolla di Coop Himmelb(l)au, Spettacolare l'architettura fluida, senza fine, di UN Studio, un bellissimo, lucente, padiglione bianco, un ambiente in continua mutazione. Di grande interesse le installazioni di Gehry e dei croati Penezic & Rogina o Diller & Scofidio, sul "come vedia¬mo, percepiamo, le cose, it mondo". Creativo e centrato sui temi pia contemporanei l'allestimento "sky city" degli MVRDV, avanzata sperimentazione delle tematiche portate avanti da qualche tempo da Viny Maas. Intelligente it "pro-totipo di architettura metereologica" di Philippe Rahm, centrato su ricerche fisico ambientali ottimizzanti la tem-peratura degli spazi abitati. Certamente spettacolare, la mostra 6 di sicuro, grande interesse, anche se, ai Giardini, a volte cade nella banality del gia visto. Scontati e facili i richiami e ally sostenibilita, piuttosto banali i padiglioni americano e russo. Cib che vince e convince della rassegna e it titolo manife¬sto e le considerazioni del suo curatore: "Oggi abbiamo bisogno di un'architettura che interroghi la realta, che non risolva i problemi ma li ponga. Con esperimenti, strutture provvisorie e qualche schiz¬zo ..." , "...non ci servono edifici che consumano grandi quantity di risorse ambientali, grattacieli che servono solo a glorificare chi li erige", "non bisogna costruire la de¬mocrazia con i templi, ma affrontare le questioni in modo critico", "Larchitettura deve tornare ally sua missione principale: produrre visioni". Costruire it futuro, in qual¬che modo senza gettare altro cemento, ricercando insie¬me sostenibilita e arte, armonia, pensiero. Arte, verde e tecnologia gli elementi/ingredienti per realizzarlo; ma non solo. It tema centrale pare essere quello "culturale", una sorta di denuncia, come gia sottolineato, nei confronti del "pragmatismo" economico delle politiche correnti, a livello planetario. Un richiamo alla forza del pensiero, della spe¬rimentazione concettuale, in cui ben si inserisce "L'Italia cerca casa" curata da Francesco Garofalo, sul tema del- l' Housing, un tema fortemente sociale che ripone l'atten-zione su questioni ancora irrisolte.
